“It\u2019s impossible to see cutouts without thinking of Matisse, but it is rare to see them done with the fresh and contemporary approach that Annie Desc\u00f4teaux has developed,” writes Ariane Fairlie.<\/p>\n

“Playfulness exists throughout Descoteaux\u2019s collage, in the scale of the pieces and the personality of the objects, as well as in the absurdity of the selection itself.”<\/h2>\n

“Descoteaux sets up each cutout slightly off kilter, so the rare piece that stands up straight feels all the more precarious for it. Each scene feels as if it was set up just before the viewer arrived, or that the objects are frozen mid-moment, waiting for the viewer to leave so they can continue from where they left off.”<\/h2>\n
