This 2007, seven by four foot collage is a massive tour de force. Above a painted brick wall, Walker recreates an urban pastiche of movie promotional posters, FBI Wanted and missing persons flyers, concert announcements, and graffiti. Walker is the father of gallery artist Kara Walker, who curated the exhibition as “part curatorial inquiry, part familial legacy.” She writes, “As a daughter, I am pressed to uncover clues to my father’s hidden self, as it has long been apparent to me that his work offers insight into his humanity. The drawings—figurative and abstract, landscape and “innerscape”—are the background hum of my life from infancy on. However, as an artist, I seem to be at cross purposes, on one hand exposing Larry Walker’s work to a wider public and critical inquiry, while negotiating the departures and liberties I have taken in my own work on the other.” Kara, a renowned artist who explores race, gender, sexuality, violence and identity in her work, is best known for her large scale black cut-paper silhouettes.

This article first appeared as a News & Notes item in Kolaj #16.
