Kim Engelen\u2019s Monthly Mini-Exhibitions in Berlin<\/h2>\n

Throughout this year, if you find yourself in Berlin on the first of the month, stop in to see Kim Engelen, who is hosting a mini-exhibition at her apartment gallery, Gallery 1 Flat Wall.<\/p>\n

On view will be installments of her \u201cBridge-Performances\u201d series. Engelen travels to tourist bridges and asks a random person to photograph her. She explains, \u201cBridges are often overlooked because they seem so obvious in our landscape. So are the tourists taking pictures in our (urban) landscapes, we see them, but we don\u2019t really see them.\u201d Surrendering control of her camera is part of the performative act in her artmaking. \u201cThis cooperation with the \u2018photographer\u2019 is a key element. The temporary \u2018photographer\u2019, becomes co-author and participant. And has, therefore, a crucial role, since, without this action or play, the work could not exist.\u201d Back in her studio, the images collected become creative fodder. \u201cI experiment with these photographs to emphasize or focus on certain ideas. Such as the bridge as a metaphor, the current refugee crisis (tourism versus immigration), power structures, communication, authorship and personal development.\u201d During the monthly, private mini-exhibition, Engelen serves drinks and snacks and engages visitors about the progress of the project.
