THINGS-SPEAK is a process of improvisation grounded in free association, stream of consciousness techniques combined with movement and objects as a catalyst for creation. Van Leeuwen welcomes performers, actors, dancers, movers, visual artists, musicians, writers or anyone interested in exploring creative acts. Volunteers will work with van Leeuwen during a closed workshop to develop performances using found objects. Some of these will be provided and participants are invited to bring their own. Past object participants include: a yellow rubber glove, a box of cereal, a framed photograph, an umbrella, a pipe, a pair of bowling shoes, a tea-cup, a chess-set, a wig, a bust of Shakespeare, a bag of feathers. Participants will need to wear clothing they can move freely in and bring to the workshop a writing device, and a minimum of three found objects.<\/p>\n<p>Note: Space is limited. RSVP required. She explores narrative and scenography through collage techniques and multi-genres, delving into subject material with vigour and imagination. Mia is the co-artistic director of the experimental \u2013 out of line theatre \u2013 founded in 2003 (Winnipeg, Manitoba). Her recent ventures include <em>Sapientia<\/em> (Montreal 2019, Lethbridge 2018, Winnipeg 2015), <em>Destroy She Said<\/em> (Winnipeg 2018), <em>Postcolonial Postcards<\/em> (Dalnavert Museum, Winnipeg 2017), and <em>White Bread<\/em> (Edmonton 2016 and Antwerp, Munich, Innsbruck, Belgrade, 2014). Mia\u2019s object theatre adaptation of <em>Sapientia<\/em> \u2013 a martyr play written in the 10th century by history\u2019s first known female playwright Hrotsvitha of Gandershiem, won two 2018 METAs (Montreal English Theatre Awards) for Outstanding Independent Production and Outstanding Contribution to Theatre (produced by Scapegoat Carnivale Theatre, Montreal). Mia van Leeuwen is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Lethbridge, specializing in Movement and Devised Theatre.
