Wangechi Mutu at Brooklyn Museum

Brooklyn, New York through 9 March 2014. “A Fantastic Journey” is the first U.S. survey of Kenyan-born and Brooklyn-based artist Wangechi Mutu. Mutu’s work “scrutinizes globalization by combining found materials, magazine cutouts, sculpture, and painted imagery.” She is perhaps best known for her collages depicting female figures that combine human, animal, plant and machine, which she places in fantastical landscapes. Foster City, California through 27 March 2014. “My Judaism Unlocked” was created specifically for the Peninsula Jewish Community Centre, captures the artist’s recollections of Jewish upbringing and life. “I have found inspiration in a variety of things, including Israeli folk dancing, lighting the Shabbat candles, scenes in Jerusalem, and the tree of life,” says the artist.
