STATEMENT
I create digital collage portraits as an Emerging Artist. My work is focused on interpreting the essence of human nature. Throughout my life, I’ve been influenced by advertising, Fine Art, and esoteric studies. These influences have combined to create a Contemporary Mashup style that is unique to my art. In the past, I painted portraits with pastels, oils, and acrylics. However, I now enjoy exploring a broad range of techniques and materials within a collage environment. My goal is to capture the hidden essences of individuals and bring out the peripheral atmospheres that support their personalities. Through my photography, I aim to provide a non-judgmental field of self-discovery, free from the artist’s ego.

BIO

Alice Shapiro was born in New York City and grew up in suburban Long Island during the 1950s and 1960s. She was greatly influenced by the rise of television advertisements. Her outlook on reality shifted when she saw a print of Picasso’s “Three Musicians” in a Home and Garden magazine. Shapiro’s art explores themes of portraiture, essence, and movement. She earned an AAS in Advertising Art from SUNY Farmingdale and studied painting with Professor Robert Huot at Hunter College. Shapiro also curated, wrote art reviews, and founded a small gallery in the South. Although she has been creating art her whole life, she began her specific practice of digital creation in 2019. In 2022, Shapiro was awarded a one-year art residency and was subsequently selected to showcase her digital works in virtual and hybrid group exhibitions in Canada, Greece, and Hong Kong. Her solo show, “Digital. Minimal. Interactive.”, will take place in North Carolina from May to July 2023 and will feature over 100 works created between 2018 and 2023, some of which incorporate her earlier paintings as details in a collage.
