Christine Ogden STATEMENT I have always been drawn to perceptions that exist beyond man-made, societal constructs. Archaic, primal and indigenous knowledge hold a particular fascination for me. I believe that physics and metaphysics are ever converging, in a song of morphic resonance, propelling our evolution towards a reconnection to the planet. I see Earth as a single living organism, self-perpetuating in a multidimensional homeostatic balance. This idea, that the whole of life is interconnected through a quantum web, feels like the only real truth to me. My latest works reference recent discoveries in physics and astronomy that point to the idea of a multiverse or multiple universes. I am currently exploring the idea of parallel worlds through traditional cut and paste collage using contemporary materials and incorporating hand painted figures. The interdimensional beings that populate these mindscapes are navigating strange worlds where even familiar things are slightly askew. BIO Before pursuing a formal education, I spent many years reading extensively on all things paranormal: psychic phenomena, astral travel, remote viewing and lucid dreaming. I was enthralled with the idea of alternate realities. A rich inner life eventually called for balance on the outside. So I moved to New York City for school and immersed myself in the deep end of culture to embrace the pulsing machine of life in full throttle. While attending The New School, I supplemented my creative writing and art history curriculum with fine art classes. I approached my education a bit like a collage, cobbling together my various academic interests into one self created program. It’s the only way college would have worked for a late bloomer with an aversion to protocol. I did my first collage in a design class and was completely transported. Creating scenarios by piecing together carefully chosen images reminded me of activities that I loved as a child, like cutting up little dresses for paper dolls and rearranging Colorforms into vignettes. I was surprised when I noticed recently that not only does my artistic process have roots in my youth, but the aesthetic does as well. The psychedelic tone of my favorite Saturday morning television shows somehow seeped into the work. The Bugaloos, Land of the Lost and the positively surreal Vegetable Soup seem to finally be having their say. It’s as if a life long, dormant contact high has finally found an outlet.
