Helene de Winter
Helene de Winter STATEMENT The world we enter in our dreams at night is where we process the impressions of what we do, think and experience by day. There, a tale builds that can not actually be put into words, but it becomes visible in elusive images. On seeing my work, paintings and collages, a similar dream-world can be experienced. In this constructed world of bright colours, people are seen occupying themselves with something that completely absorbs them. Or they might be absorbed in dreamy idleness. The environment in which they are located is very recognizable, or very strange, full of plants or animals, for example. Small and large alongside each other. Spaces and architecture are defining elements. The game of patterns, measurements and scale results in the combination of images and associations that heightens the alienation. All these images full of stories come together in collages that are made with pictures that I have collected over the years. In the making, I use photography, scanning, computer manipulation, cutting, gluing, drawing and painting. These collages can be the end-product, but can also be worked on again. For example, with embroidery or paint, a collage can also give cause to be painted because of the ways the paint can be used to make the image even more interesting. Or the image of the collage itself challenges to be caught in paint. Then, beside the game with the visual elements, also the paint will play its role and the layering in the image increases even more. BIO Born in the little town of Doorn in The Netherlands, I attended secondary school in Veenendaal where Art was one of my final subjects. In spite of the high grade I got for it, I went to study Nursing. In 2005 I decided on a second career in the arts and studied at the Nieuwe Akademie Utrecht. During this period, I used collages as studies for my paintings, but more and more they became independent works, which exist alongside my paintings. My paintings are still often based on the collages I make. Since my graduation, my collages and paintings have been in several shows throughout the country and in Germany. In the summer of 2012, I exhibited one of my collages in Het Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, The Netherlands. In March 2014, some of my collages where published in the art book Thawt by Mike Koppa (collage artist & publisher) featuring artists from around the world with collages and poems.
