STATEMENT

I am a mixed media collage artist working on a variety of substrates from glass to wood. My work is maximalist, merging abstract and figurative, with an emphasis on playing with formal elements of compositional theory to belay chaos. I use memorabilia, contemporary and vintage magazines, and the detritus of everyday culture to explore themes of the relationship of place, culture, and the expression of changing social mores from a quizzical and often humorous perspective.

BIO

Julie A Bell is a Canadian contemporary mixed media artist, designer, and educator. She works primarily in mixed media collage, applied to a variety of substrates, primarily glass and wood. Her idiosyncratic and chaotic imagery is rooted in the exploration of history of place, traditional vs. contemporary culture, and the evolving social landscape as expressed through commercial media. Using found materials, handmade paper, acrylics, and inks, Julie carefully constructs compositions that are full of energy and layered meaning.

Julie holds both a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking and a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking and drawing. She has worked as an illustrator, designer, and instructor in the U.S. and Canada. Her work is held in private collections across the world.
