Melina Merlin
Melina Merlin STATEMENT My work is centered around the intersectionality of my gender, sexual orientation, Afro-Mexican-Greek heritages, and current experiences while maintaining a connection to my ancestry. As a social justice activist, I use narrative figurative drawing to incorporate memories, histories, and magic realism. I document and reimagine my life experiences to elevate the stature and prestige of women and their lives while challenging existing power structures. BIO Melina was born in San Francisco and has lived on the West Coast before relocating to London, England in 2010. After retiring from her legal career, she discovered her love for drawing in 2016. Since then, she has explored various creative fields like documentary film making, soundscapes, performance, and painting. However, she always returns to what she calls “assemblage drawing”. This involves merging different mediums in her drawing practice. Melina is currently in her second year at Goldsmiths University of London, studying Fine Art. She continues to hone her craft outside of institutional education. Melina is passionate about integrating her biodiversity work into her art practice. She has won regional and national awards for her art and biodiversity wildflower projects. ARTIST CONTACT [click to email] IMAGES |
