Simon Blake
Simon Blake STATEMENT I have created collages all of my life. I am drawn to the humorous, bizarre and odd. Having a very nostalgic nature, I am drawn to vintage and unusual ephemera. My work uses vintage and archival materials. I use medical scalpel blades and high quality scissors to cut out the paper imagery. I try to create as simple a composition as possible with a strong narrative thread. Quotes are a very big inspiration. BIO Simon Blake is a graphic artist and mixed-media filmmaker. My career has taken a series of diversions and paths over the past 25 years. I studied graphic design, illustration and mixed-media film in England. I went onto to teach children 35mm “scratch” animation, created film titles for numerous Hollywood and British screen feature films. A brief stint at the BBC working with noted motion designer Antony Buonomo on Comic Relief and several other TV shows was followed by directing commercials and mixed media projects through a number of English and US production companies for many Fortune 500 companies. Since then, my work has diversified into graphic design, branding and collage work. My commercial clients included Microsoft, Nestlé, Hewlett Packard, AT&T, American Cancer Society, Chase Bank, United Airlines, Jazz and Heritage Festival, Energy, Burger King, Audubon Zoo, Charles Schwab, Maine State Lottery, Heineken, Intel, Hershey, Barnes and Noble, Disney, Crayola, Pepperidge Farm, CenturyLink, New York Lottery, Levi’s and Coca-Cola. My work has been shown at Sundance, Cartoons on the Bay, Amalfi, Italy and has garnered two Association of Independent Commercial Producers awards and is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and has been shown throughout the world. It is private collections including the USA, Australia and Europe. As a longtime collector of all things ephemera, I love to create collages, mixed media works and archival prints.
