STATEMENT

William Gaylor Peters’ collages are an exploration of Ernstian methods of juxtaposition using modern found images. Focusing on absurd yet cohesive marriages of objects within bizarre settings, he looks for similar details in lighting and scale so that every cut and pasted item in his work feels like it visually belongs in the same world. The use of a colour photocopier is essential to his craft, aiding him with scale, lighting and mirroring effects. Imagery includes cosmic starscapes, aquatic life forms, and classical statues to create a feeling of timelessness in an alien but familiar realm. Peters wants the viewer to simultaneously be made aware of the macabre and the infinite, as well as the beauty of human made objects set against the rawness of natural forms.
