Certain essences of being an artist mirror those of an athlete. In both realms, women stand marginalized, their portions unequal. This inequity, however, is not unique to Iran but rather a global construct; this is a global symphony of injustice. The bias against women’s venture into the breakable domains of art, sports, and economy weaves an intimate tapestry between these two worlds. These two worlds possess the enchanting power to weave emotions, paint inner conflicts, and etch enduring memories.

My creations revolve around this essence, the fragment we strive to seize, juxtaposed against what is bestowed. We are perpetually entrenched in the battle to claim what is rightfully ours within both realms; every day, we sharpen ourselves for the conflicts that unfold across art, sports, and all domains marred by anti-women structures. We have been honed and readied to challenge the institutionalized patriarchy woven into society, emerging victorious in the pursuit of our inherently entitled rights.

BIO

Maryam Amirvaghefi (b.1989, Tehran, Iran) received her MFA from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and her BFA from the Sooreh University.
