STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am an experimental film photographer and collage artist taught by myself and my community. I use traditional collage techniques and alternative printing methods to manipulate both personal and archival images. I often start with my own photographs, recomposing my own images and letting imperfections, cuts, layers, and textures exist alongside the photo. The final products combine experimental photography and mixed-media collage to develop dreamlike interpretations that blur lines between recollection and reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I use these mediums to explore memory, identity, and collective experiences\u2014particularly how images shape our understanding of place and self. I am especially interested in how collage can offer new ways of seeing what has been erased. My work asks not only what we remember, but how those memories are constructed and transformed over time. My artwork centers sentimentality and storytelling to explore the geography of community history and the idea of home. Being an artist raised in the foothills of rural North Carolina, much of my work is deeply rooted in the American South\u2014where I feel most alive, awake, and attuned to the land and the people who shape it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexandra Benson is an interdisciplinary artist and cultural organizer currently working in photography, collage, and public art. She uses traditional collage techniques and alternative printing methods to manipulate personal archival images and photographs taken on analog cameras. Her work centers sentimentality and storytelling to explore the geography of community history and the idea of home. Her work has been commissioned by Sony Music Entertainment, published in Photo Trouv\u00e9e Magazine<\/em>, and shown at HOMME Gallery, KLEUR, and the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts. She is the recipient of the President\u2019s Prize in Arts Management from Salem College. Her studio is based in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
