STATEMENT

Making collage is my way of breathing new life into forgotten moments, an exciting voyage through history captured in images. Each photograph I use invites viewers into someone else’s world, filled with untold stories waiting to be rediscovered and reshaped. Using scissors and glue, I transform archival fragments into vibrant, lived landscapes that pulse with memory, emotion, and imagination, inviting viewers to step into stories both personal and universal.

My collages explore moments of lived experience, revealing the intersection of past and present where reality and dreams often blur. Central themes include history, surrealism and Judaism, approached with both seriousness and whimsy, often tempered by playful elements. Architecture, people and the stories written into the streets inspire the narratives I tell. My goal is to invite viewers to connect with moments in history or find inspiration for their own stories through my work.

Ultimately, my art is a cabinet of curiosities on paper, where worlds come alive and photographs find new meanings.

BIO

Ginger Sedlarova is a collage artist, storyteller, and accidental archivist from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She creates vibrant, emotionally charged paper-based landscapes of memory using imagery, texture and colour. After a 30-year career in daily newspapers and glossy magazines in Canada and Central Europe, she transitioned to a full-time art practice focused on complex visual narratives that examine memory, migration, and identity. Her work observes and celebrates people and the scars they leave on the world. She loves collage because “it brings a feeling of surprise, of the unexpected. By the time a new collage is created, there’s always something different about it than what I had set out to do.” Her collages have been exhibited internationally and she continues to build an award-winning practice rooted in the words of one of her favourite artists, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner: “You can do anything. Nothing is forbidden.”

Ginger lives and works in Burnaby, British Columbia with her husband and two rescue cats.
