STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my work I have embraced joyful, whimsical and dark imagery. I may begin with a strong idea, a vague idea or no idea; or let the materials nudge my imagination as I improvise. Musical, theatrical, ecological, socio-political and personal themes permeate my work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have worked with a variety of materials and for the past few years I\u2019ve explored collage with paint and graphic media. The colored or printed pieces offer a visual conversation between design and meaning which can allow the image to develop in surprising ways. I like the way collage can inject a different kind of energy, humor and instability to both process and result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Splendid, witty, naughty, fine work.” I’m rather proud of this visitor\u2019s book remark from my exhibition “Deth and The Mayden” at the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, December 2015-January 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

British artist Ros Cuthbert MA (RCA), RWA studied Painting at the Central School of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art, London in the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ros has won several art prizes including the Madame Tussaud\u2019s Award at the RCA, 2nd prize at the National Portrait Gallery Competition and 1st prize at the RWA Open. She has exhibited in many one-person and group shows in the UK and beyond, and has work in private collections worldwide. Work in public collections includes the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Poetry Library, the Royal College of Art, and Madame Tussauds London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1998 Ros was elected an RWA Academician and in 2005 she became a member of the St Ives Society of Artists after acting as an Arts Council consultant for the Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During 2018-2019 Ros collaborated with Soap Soup Theatre, devising, making and touring nationally an Arts Council of England supported theatrical production. The show, called MathildaMathilda<\/em>, was inspired by her collages and her love of jazz. It included puppetry and a jazz and electronic soundscape with specially commissioned songs, lyrics written by Ros. She has also written a novel for children based on the story devised for the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ros lives and works in the village of Winscombe near Bristol, UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
