Meaning to Glue

KOLAJ #1

Book Review

In January, Kolaj published an announcement about an exhibition at the Nightingale Gallery at Eastern Oregon University. We thought that the premise, combined with the choice of artists was very promising. A couple of weeks later, we had a surprise in the mailbox: the Meaning To Glue catalogue. The catalogue takes the form of a 8.5 inches x 5.5 inches, full colour, saddle-stitched paperback.

The book opens up to a two-page essay by Cory W. Peeke, director of the gallery and curator of the exhibition. Being a prolific collage artist himself as well, Peeke’s point of view on the topic provides an interesting perspective. Cogent when going through a brief history of collage and its relevance in contemporary art, he’s even more interesting when he is commenting on the process. His insight regarding the act of juxtaposing images is particularly strong.

The catalogue also presents a profile of the eleven artists that were part of the exhibition. The lineup shows a rich blend of some well-known collagists as well as some established and rising Oregon artists. A two-page spread is dedicated to each of them, depicting two to four images, just enough to introduce the work. Some spreads are completed with a comment on the process, written by the artist. The book concludes with a section in which a succinct biography of each artist can be found.

The catalogue can be obtained in exchange for a small donation. For further details, contact the gallery directly by email.
