Italian artist Giuseppe Ragazzini created Mixerpiece, an app that uses images from the public domain to allow children and adults to combine and create new works of art while simultaneously learning art history. There are over 200 items and shapes available, all public domain and taken, as Ragazzini says, from “the greatest masterpieces of all time”. Not sure about your composition? Shake the tablet and the app recomposes your work using random elements from the categories you chose originally. When you are satisfied with your work, you can save it in your Mixerpiece Gallery, share it on social media or send it as a postcard.

Designed as an educational tool, the app works on iPads, interactive terminals, wall-mounted touch screens, and personal computers. Ragazzini has also worked on digital set designs and projection mapping for the theatre and concerts. The app has been nominated for Best New Mobile App and Best Mobile App of 2018 and is available for iOS devices from the US App Store for $2.99. Learn more at www.mixerpiece.com. To see examples of Mixerpiece work created by children and adults, go to Instagram @mixerpiece. Search for “Mixerpiece” on Vimeo and YouTube for demonstration videos.
