Leslie A. Brown, curator of “Resurrection: Beckoning the Crone,” says, “I have often wondered what the world might be like with a more prevalent feminine or a balance of feminine and masculine consciousness. Would there still be war, violence, starving children, homelessness, and aggression, or might there be a different version of the world we live in? I have enormous faith in the power of art and the empowered, contemporary woman, but not in a political sense, as I have no confidence in politics. However, I believe that through education and spiritual growth, we can evolve to a consciousness embodying the feminine qualities of nurturance, compassion, humility, cooperation, and love.”

16″x16″; cabinet cards, wallpaper, leather tooled album cover, bread stained parchment paper fragment, bone mah jong tiles, handwritten note circa 1860s, carved jade handle, scrap metal, on wood panel; 2021. Courtesy of the artist.
Brown continues, “Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good. What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more, continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale.”
