A native Washingtonian, Mans spent many of her formative years living abroad throughout the African Diaspora. The artist reflects upon these experiences in her artistic practice, using mixed media collage as a tool to tell the many stories of the global Black experience. The artist views collage as emblematic of the cultural interconnectedness of the Diaspora. Just as the geographically dispersed people are tied together by the common thread of ancestry, in collage, disjointed pieces are fused to communicate one story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"888\" src=\"http:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/paula-mans-i-will-braid-my-hair-even-in-seasons-of-rain.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/paula-mans-i-will-braid-my-hair-even-in-seasons-of-rain.jpg 700w, https:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/paula-mans-i-will-braid-my-hair-even-in-seasons-of-rain-600x761.jpg 600w, https:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/paula-mans-i-will-braid-my-hair-even-in-seasons-of-rain-300x381.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/paula-mans-i-will-braid-my-hair-even-in-seasons-of-rain-260x330.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>
I Will Braid My Hair, Even in Seasons of Rain<\/em> by Paula Mans
20″x16″; acrylic, charcoal, and paper collage on wood panel; 2023.
