All of the artworks in this exhibition are examples of artists working at the intersection of collage and photography. Artists are cutting, mixing, and adding to photographs. They are photographing collage found naturally occurring in the urban landscape. They are intervening on or repurposing historic photographs to tell a new story. Artists are appropriating the grammatical concept “Locative” and photographing fragments strategically placed in the world or in a fabricated landscape. They are making art with their family photographs. They are collaging into self-portraits. They are taking photographs to use as fragments. They are using the sun as glue and the material of photography as a meaning-making device. Each of these approaches leads to more complex storytelling that pushes the limits of traditional photography and collage.

During this edition of Kolaj LIVE Online, Ric Kasini Kadour will present a virtual tour of the exhibition and we will hear from some of the artists in the exhibition. Kadour will also present a preview of the new zine, Locative Kolaj by Special Agent Collage Collective, which was made by attendees at the 2025 edition of Kolaj Fest New Orleans. Kadour wrote, “The intersection of collage and photography is not like a simple crossroads where two streets meet. It’s more like a roundabout where many paths come together before shooting off in different directions. The deeper one gets into this inquiry, the more road metaphors fail. It may be more helpful to think of the intersection of collage and photography as neuropathways or mycelium.”

GET TICKETS

ABOUT KOLAJ INSTITUTE’S PHOTOGRAPHY & COLLAGE PROJECT

The mediums of collage and photography are bound together in an ongoing dialogue. The photographer makes pictures of the world. The collagist remixes those pictures to tell a story about the world we live in. “Today, we’re taking more photos than at any previous time in history,” noted EyeEm contributor Lars Mensel. “Many photographers are asking themselves how to set their work apart from that of their peers. Photography has become less about the skill to take technically perfect pictures–most modern smartphones accomplish this at the touch of a button–but how pictures are combined to tell a story.” In partnership with the New Orleans Photo Alliance, the Photography & Collage project explores the intersection of these two mediums. We ask, What happens when a collagist picks up the camera? What happens when a photographer collages their pictures?

Throughout 2024 and 2025, Kolaj Institute hosted virtual residencies during which artists made work at the intersection of photography and collage. Each June, New Orleans Photo Alliance Gallery hosted exhibitions as part of Kolaj Fest New Orleans and in December 2024, Kolaj Institute presented “Camera & Collage” at its gallery in New Orleans. These activities along with that of a number of solo artists in residence and articles in the magazine have given us many points of reference to view and think about the intersection. In December 2025 as part of PhotoNOLA 2025, Kolaj Institute presented, “Pictures at the Intersection of Photography & Collage”, an exhibition at its gallery in New Orleans. Kolaj Institute will publish a book about their findings.

ABOUT KOLAJ INSTITUTE GALLERY

The mission of Kolaj Institute is to support artists, curators, and writers who seek to study, document, and disseminate ideas that deepen our understanding of collage as a medium, a genre, a community, and a 21st century movement. We operate a number of initiatives meant to bring together community, investigate critical issues, and raise collage’s standing in the art world.

Kolaj Institute’s Gallery in New Orleans presents exhibitions and connects Kolaj Institute and the artists we work with to the vibrant St. Claude Arts District. We produce 8-10 exhibitions a year and participate in Second Saturday, the neighborhood’s monthly art walk, putting the collage art, books and exhibitions in front of New Orleanians and visitors. The Gallery is located at 2374 Saint Claude Avenue, Suite 230, at the corner with St. Roch Avenue above the Peach Cobbler Factory. The Gallery is open Thursday-Saturday, Noon-6PM or by appointment.

ABOUT RIC KASINI KADOUR

Ric Kasini Kadour, a 2021 Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Curatorial Fellow, is a writer, artist, publisher, and cultural worker.
