In recent months, Kolaj Institute hosted a series of virtual and in-person residencies during which artists researched folklore globally and carnival in New Orleans, specifically. When we look at culture through the lens of Folklore, we see culture shaping our sense of place, our relationship to communities, and a framework for how we exist in the world around us,&#8221; wrote curator Ric Kasini Kadour.&nbsp;&#8220;Carnival in New Orleans could be considered the largest, ongoing folklore festival in the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the exhibition artists are sharing stories about Carnival. Set on a &#8220;New Orleans-Opoly&#8221; game board, <strong>Carol M Lynch<\/strong>&#8216;s collage, <em>Takin&#8217; It To The Streets<\/em>, speaks to the Carnival traditions of Black Masking Indians as a force of community cohesion and well-being. Another collage from Lynch recalls the story of the old Mardi Gras anthem, &#8220;If Ever I Cease to Love.&#8221; <strong>Charulata Prasada<\/strong>&#8216;s collage based on the colors of Carnival invites us to remember the economic, social, and political history from which Carnival arose. <strong>Heidi Hickman<\/strong> presents Carnival as gumbo of culture. <strong>Julie Glass<\/strong> invites us to think about the walkers and spectators who enjoy the festival and the memories that are made, while <strong>Ric Kasini Kadour<\/strong> reflects on a French Quarter character whose story is becoming folklore. <strong>Jennifer Evans<\/strong>&#8216; collages juxtapose contemporary women of Carnival with their 19th century antecedents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"621\" src=\"https:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/Folklore-on-Parade-Gain-of-Function.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17911\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/Folklore-on-Parade-Gain-of-Function.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/Folklore-on-Parade-Gain-of-Function-600x373.jpg 600w, https:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/Folklore-on-Parade-Gain-of-Function-700x435.jpg 700w, https:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/Folklore-on-Parade-Gain-of-Function-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/Folklore-on-Parade-Gain-of-Function-768x477.jpg 768w, https:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/Folklore-on-Parade-Gain-of-Function-260x161.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Gain of Function: Folklore<\/em> (L) and <em>Gain of Function: New Mutation\/Old Traditions\/Collective Effervescence installation<\/em> (R) (installation view) by Emily Denlinger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>An installation by <strong>Emily Denlinger<\/strong> (with contributions from <strong>Catherine Cassel<\/strong>, <strong>LaVonna Varnado Brown<\/strong>, and <strong>Julie Eisenberg Pitman<\/strong>) teaches us about collective effervescence, the heightened sense of energy and unity individuals feel when they come together as a group for a shared experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artwork by <strong>Tracy von Ahsen<\/strong>, <strong>Kayte Terry<\/strong>, and <strong>Trish Crapo<\/strong> explore veils, liminality, death, and offerings: themes that often appear in folklore. <strong>Shacqeel Coleby<\/strong>&#8216;s collage reflects on a story about locking down the dead. Artwork by <strong>Tiffany Wilson<\/strong> and<strong> CoCo Harris<\/strong> offer viewers the opportunity to consider the blurry line between folklore and history.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Folklore on Parade&#8221; is a beginning. In the coming months, artists will come together in virtual and in-person forums to talk about their work and articles will appear in future issues of the Folklore Collage Society journal and <em>Kolaj Magazine<\/em>, where the history, folklore, themes, and ideas raised by this artwork will be explored more deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ABOUT KOLAJ INSTITUTE &nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission of Kolaj Institute is to support artists, curators, and writers who seek to study, document, and disseminate ideas that deepen our understanding of collage as a medium, a genre, a community, and a 21st century movement. The Gallery is located at 2374 Saint Claude Avenue, Suite 230, at the corner with St. Roch Avenue on the 2nd floor.
