Meditation, mythology and the complexity of world culture has forever changed his sense of self. The ritual of art-making allows him to reflect upon the space between cultural memberships and contribute to the discussion of cross-cultural communication.

Horback says, “When I work in the studio, images initially invoke cultural designations but the activity of layering, tearing, & drawing all complicates & intrudes upon them. Ideas fade into elements, textures, lines & colors- becoming much more manageable. This integration of materials parallels the cultural complexity of my search for meaning amidst an often marginalizing world.”

Evan Clayton Horback graduated from State University of New York with dual degrees in Visual Art & Art Education. He moved from New Hampshire one year ago and now calls Olympia, Washington his home.

(text adapted from materials provided by the gallery and the artist)

INFORMATION

Gallery 6 PDX
131 NE 6th Avenue
Portland, Oregon 97232 USA
(503) 206-7280

Hours:
Friday-Sunday, Noon-5PM or by appointment (call (503) 297-4262)

MAP | WEBSITE | FACEBOOK

Image:
untitled portrait
by Evan Clayton Horback
5″x5″
cut-and-paste mixed media
Courtesy of Gallery 6 PDX, Portland, Oregon

5-28 September 2014 Opening reception: Friday, 5 September, 6-8PM “Dots & Lines” is a show of new collages by Evan Clayton Horback Evan Clayton Horback lived and studied in ashrams in the United States and India.
