Joram Roukes & Charles Wilkin<\/p>\n

This Masters Projects Exhibition of work by Joram Roukes and Charles Wilkin includes\u00a0nine large scale paintings\u00a0by Roukes and 25 new collage works by Wilkin.<\/p>\n

Roukes and Wilkin are thematically united by the often dark nature of their\u00a0surreal subjects and their intuitive juxtapositions of photographic imagery\u00a0and abstracted forms. Though emerging from distinctly \"charles-wilkin-the-vacancy\"different backgrounds\u00a0(Roukes is from a small town in the Netherlands and Wilkin is from Buffalo, NY) and using distinctly different mediums (painting vs. collage), the two artists are\u00a0driven by remarkably similar concerns. Each artist uses appropriated images\u00a0as “readymades” within their unique stream-of-consciousness styles, which\u00a0incorporate fluidly designed layers of content and media that extrude and protrude from one another.<\/p>\n

Roukes\u2019 collage-like paintings of anthropomorphic-hipsteresque-hybrids set\u00a0within dystopian landscapes visually invoke cultural tensions through Realist and Expressionistic painting styles. Wilkin\u2019s painterly collages portraying vintage\u00a0portraits, whose facial features have been distorted and reconstructed from fragmented print media, retain their aura of glamour, whilst simultaneously\u00a0celebrating the grotesque. Ultimately, both artists\u2019 subjects reside within a\u00a0dream-like surrealistic place, alluding to themes concerning the nature of\u00a0interpretation and the ways in which images embody cultural memory.<\/p>\n

In connection with this show, full colour publications and\u00a0limited edition prints by both artists are scheduled for release on 5 March.<\/p>\n
