Berta Walker Gallery Leads the Charge
\nto Celebrate Iconic Collage Artist\u00a0Varujan Boghosian<\/h2>\n

Varujan Boghosian turns 90 this year and Berta Walker Gallery<\/a> in Provincetown, Massachusetts is hosting a series of exhibitions and events celebrating the iconic bricoleur.<\/p>\n

Kent Fine Art<\/a> summed up why Boghosian captures our attention at his exhibition at their New York gallery in November 2015: “As a practitioner of the modernist tradition of paste-ups in the wake of John Heartfield and Max Ernst, Varujan Boghosian speaks not only with things, but through the medium of found objects. By re-contextualizing 100 years-worth of found materials with scissors and paste, time and context are re-examined. Boghosian’s approach is intuitive and meditative, dealing less with external social factors and lending more focus to the materiality and history of the object. Fusion and juxtaposition are what sets his work apart along with an acute understanding of literary history, while his inquisitive nature is what lends poetry to his constructions. His use of contradictory visual elements is sympathetic to Ernst but the content he creates is all his own.”<\/p>\n

A profile of Varujan Boghosian by Provincetown artist and writer Andr\u00e9 van der Wende will appear in Kolaj #16<\/a>, to be released in July 2016. Celebrations for Boghosian’s 90th birthday include exhibitions at Berta Walker’s Galleries in Provincetown and Wellfleet, as well as at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown in August, where Boghosian will be the featured honoured guest at the Center’s annual dinner and auction.<\/p>\n
