How Laurie Kanyer Became a Collage Artist<\/h2>\n

“It was April 2016. My niece had gone into labour with her first child. She lived in Texas, I was in Washington. There wasn\u2019t much I could do. Under different circumstances, given my background serving pregnant and parenting mothers, it would have been natural for me to have a role,” writes Laurie Kayner in Kolaj<\/em> #18. From Washington state, Kayner, an artist and retired mental health professional, tells the story of how a need to work through her feelings in that moment led her to collage.<\/p>\n

Collage would use the small muscles of my hands to pace the hormones streaming through my body. As time was suspend in waiting, I had an activity to anchor myself. Finally, I knew the images from the various media would have a stronger visual punch than my other media.<\/em><\/h2>\n

\nFor thirty-one years, Laurie Kanyer worked as an Infant Mental Health professional, Certified Family Life Educator and Children\u2019s Grief Specialist. She earned her Master\u2019s in Human Development from St. Mary\u2019s University in Minnesota. She is the author of 25 Things To Do When Grandpa Passes Away<\/em>, Braided Memories<\/em>, and The Journey of Becoming a Mother<\/em>. In 2015, she received the Washington State Museum Association Award of Individual of Excellence as the Director of the Yakima Light Project Gallery.<\/p>\n
