While playing with scale and balance, her handcut paper collages aim to encourage viewers to contemplate the intricacies of nature and our complex relationships with it. The importance of human connection, the breaking down of hierarchies, and a focus on a holistic world view frequently influence Clouâtre’s creative process.

Clouâtre is an emerging collage artist based in Ottawa, Ontario. In 2015, she received a Masters degree in Art History from Carleton University, with a concentration in Art Exhibition and Curatorial Studies. Her collage work amalgamates a variety of imagery, including vintage, black and white photographs and pictures from the natural world. Inspired by natural history illustration from the 1800s and Surrealism, Clouâtre aims to create whimsical scenes that invite viewers into her built dreamscapes. With the intention of bringing attention to tangible objects that have otherwise been discarded or forgotten about, most of Clouâtre’s imagery is sourced from a variety of paper-based paraphernalia – such as magazines and books–which have been scavenged from used bookstores, yard sales and thrift shops.

During the opening reception, 7-9PM, on 11 October, there will be a live music performance by Daniel Couper and Ben Wright. One of Clouâtre’s collages is featured on the album cover of Couper’s single, “Luna”.

(text adapted from the artist’s press materials)

INFORMATION

The Art House Café
555 Somerset Street West
Ottawa, Ontario K1R 5K1 Canada
[click to email]

Hours:
Monday-Wednesday, 10AM-10PM
Thursday-Friday, 10AM-Late
Saturday, 8AM-Late
Sunday, 8AM-8PM

MAP | WEBSITE | FACEBOOK

Image: (top)
Narwhal with Flowers
by Rebecca Clouâtre
12″x16″
found images, metal leaf and glue on cold pressed watercolour paper
2018
Courtesy of the artist

Image: (centre)
Celestial Fish
by Rebecca Clouâtre
10″x8″
found images, metal leaf and glue on cold pressed watercolour paper
2018
Courtesy of the artist

COLLAGE ON VIEW Creatures of Whimsy: Rebecca Clouâtre at The Art House Café in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada 1-31 October 2018 In her first solo exhibition, Rebecca Clouâtre has brought together recent works that highlight a variety of themes and concepts…

[11
COLLAGE ON VIEW Gatherers at Gallery 101 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada 23 March-20 April 2019 The idea for "Gatherers" began with six artists’ desire to showcase various approaches to collage as a contemporary art medium.
