Daphne Silbiger
Daphne Silbiger STATEMENT Daphne considers character and scene in their collage work, and is interested in the medium’s principle of recontextualization as a method of storytelling. They are interested in the viewer’s experience of creating connections within a work, and rely on strategic relationship-building between “subjects” (i.e. collaged images) to suggest active theatrical effects like gesture and intention. Daphne works exclusively with found paper materials, and creates many of their works using a single source like a magazine or book to try and tease out the gestalt meaning of that source–or, to isolate and investigate concepts such as obedience, mechanization, and dance. BIO Daphne Silbiger is a multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn. Their collage work has been exhibited independently around New York and published by a grant from Queens Council for the Arts. They produce and perform experimental electronic music as a sound designer for performance and as an independent artist. Their work in theater includes the plays Six Years Old and Pound and has received support from a MacDowell fellowship. They hold an MFA in Playwriting from the University of Texas at Austin.
