STATEMENT

This series is called “Shoppers’ Fatigue: The Decision Aprons”.  The Aprons explore the increasing complications of living in an overstimulated, complex, quickly evolving technological world. Choices can be overwhelming–details are often absorbing and time consuming. At the same time, the quality of the information that we get is highly variable.  This series explores the challenges of making decisions while we are distracted by multitasking and performing under the influence of media manipulation.

All manner of lifestyle priorities are addressed in this series of 16 24″-square etching collages on cloth–what products to buy, which entertainment to pursue, what social and political causes to support, which subcultures to join.  How can we maintain and navigate sanity and productivity, given such a vast array of choices?

BIO

As a self-proclaimed “guerrilla sociologist”, I offer colorful narratives on life in Los Angeles.  My assemblages, wallworks, and installations tell stories of bloated consumerist values, driving habits, political issues, and the struggle to remain expressive in this age of electronic screens.  My creative writing textbook (Hot Words, A Student’s Guide to Writing Truth, Royal Fireworks Press) and my solo spoken word CD (Rocky Road Peep Show and Paperhanger’s Directory Point-of-Purchase Dreams, New Alliance Records) further extend my cheerleading efforts to live a creative life.  I use etchings, drawings, fibers, text and gutterwalk findings on antique supports to tell humorous, bombastic stories that catalogue our responses to urban life.

Most of my work consists of etching collages.  Please visit my website for images and documentation.  Thanks for supporting collage artists!
