Laura Tringali Holmes
Laura Tringali Holmes STATEMENT I make works of collage using paper and other media. I work in collage because its materials and processes allow me to speak my mind across generations of time and space by using both the detritus and precious memories of other people’s lives. My collages can be read as a progression of layers, with each layer adding a deeper meaning to the narative. Most of my work contains a variety of visual clues that can lead an observant viewer on an ever-deeper interpretative journey. These associations may be embedded in color, texture, and imagery, but words also play an important role. (I love to incorporate found phrases from old books and magazines–my favorite so far is “I have finished with this little farrago.”) Although I do use everyday paper, much of my stock comes from works published between the late 1800s and the 1980s. I use a variety of hand-made transparent elements in my work because they provoke viewers to explore the inner workings of the subject at hand. I use decollage in the same way, for depth, texture, and the surprise of discovery upon close observation. My goal as a collage artist is to entice viewers to look below the superficial topmost plane of reality to the many underlying layers of meaning that exist in even the most ordinary-appearing circumstances. BIO My collages have been exhibited both across the United States and internationally. My most memorable exhibit was in 2010, when 28 of my pieces were featured in a gallery show in the capital of New York state entitled “The Strange, the Surreal, & the Sentimental.” Currently I work full-time as an artist, but past career iterations have included over two decades in publishing, specifically in fine woodworking/artisan-homebuilding writing and consultancy. I’ve also developed writing programs for underachieving New York City public schools and piloted those programs in the classroom with great success. I live and work just outside of New York City.
