Leeay Aikawa
Leeay Aikawa STATEMENT Leeay Aikawa is a visual artist based in Toronto. Aikawa’s artistic practice orbits around collage, illustration, fine art and graphic design, but she is most notably known for her surreal, and playful, collage work. Growing up in Japan, Aikawa was always drawn to the vintage photography and advertising of the western world. Combining what at first seems contradicting, Aikawa’s images are a sensational and compositional fusion of found images. Most of works by Aikawa question the nature of the assumptions we automatically generate when we see certain symbols or ideas and explore themes such as feminism, LGBTQ rights, religion, consumption culture, and complementary relationship. BIO Originally from Shimonoseki, Japan, Leeay Aikawa lives and works in Toronto. She holds Bachelor of Design degree in Illustration from the Ontario College of Art and Design University in Toronto. Aikawa had a solo exhibition, “Taste of Extraordinary” (presented by Drambuie Canada Special Pop-Up) at Stephen Bulger Gallery, Toronto, in 2013. Group exhibitions include the 2016 Pride Group Exhibition at Hashtag Gallery in Toronto and “KORAJI” at 401 Richmond, Toronto, in 2010. ARTIST CONTACT [click to email] IMAGES
