STATEMENT

Leeay Aikawa is a visual artist based in Toronto. Aikawa’s artistic practice orbits around collage, illustration, fine art and graphic design, but she is most notably known for her surreal, and playful, collage work. Growing up in Japan, Aikawa was always drawn to the vintage photography and advertising of the western world. Combining what at first seems contradicting, Aikawa’s images are a sensational and compositional fusion of found images.

Most of works by Aikawa question the nature of the assumptions we automatically generate when we see certain symbols or ideas and explore themes such as feminism, LGBTQ rights, religion, consumption culture, and complementary relationship.
