Eryk Salvaggio
Eryk Salvaggio STATEMENT My work is influenced by surrealism, Dada, and pataphysics, but also 19th century investigations into thought and spirit photography. I am fascinated by the language and structure of the unconscious, as described by Freud and Lacan. I approach collage making as a form of Freud’s “dream-work,” drawing new stories from the archives of our collective visual history. I connect this to false spiritual photography mediums of the past, which relied on camera tricks to bring the dead to life or materialize unconscious thoughts on photographic plates. Much of my work is an attempt to connect to the uncanny through digital media. I imagine my work as a way of setting some ghosts free. BIO Eryk Salvaggio is an artist and writer living in San Francisco, California. Once dubbed “the Harry Potter of the Digital Vanguard” for his internet art work, Salvaggio has exhibited internationally and his work has been covered by publications including The New York Times, Mute Magazine, Neural, Flannel, and Detritus.
