STATEMENT

Creating collages can be compared to a laborious journey through the world of fantasies, associations, or through a specific theater of events. In order to create a collage, you need to collect interesting and peculiar materials that, when combined, create a new image and convey an idea, providing a unique form.

BIO

Maria Filek, who was born in Wadowice, Poland in 1954, is a longtime art teacher and a graduate of the Art Institute of the University of Silesia in Cieszyn.

Since 1995, she has participated in group exhibitions mounted by the Wadowice Artistic Community. She was a juror for and showed work in the international competitions for “ex libris”: Gliwice 2005, Malbork 2007, Šiauliai (Lithuania) 2008, Burgstadt (Germany) 2014, which she considers a special achievement.

In 2022, she showed her collage during Birr Vintage Week and Arts Festival in Ireland during the international collage exhibiton “Migration”. Her last solo exhibition took place in Wadowice Art Centre in 2022.

Currently, she is interested in creating collages that she composes using newspaper clippings and–what is unique–handmade graphic materials.  She feels good working in small graphic forms. Her favorite technique is etching. For several years, she has also been interested in ceramics.
