Sarah Perkins
Sarah Perkins STATEMENT Essentially my work is a combination of collage and my own paintings that are then layered up and manipulated in Photoshop. My starting point can be a brief/commission; story; a trip; a poem; an experience from which, like a magpie, I collect anything that I can find that I associate with that source. Once I have my pieces and canvas together, the whole process happens organically, sometimes I have a idea, but I try to let the image evolve itself…it’s more exciting that way. BIO Since studying at Chelsea School of Art and Central St Martins, I have been working successfully and internationally as a freelance London-based illustrator for thirty years. My commissions cover literary fiction, classics, popular fiction and gift books, as well as editorial and design. I have recently been taken on by Hybrid Gallery, who are selling my personal work as fine art prints. All my images are a mixture of collage and my own painting, mark making and sometimes text. My influences are eclectic: found objects, textures and pictures; a piece of narrative writing; a period/event in history; places I have been; folklore and customs. I have received awards from Elle magazine; Reader’s Digest; The AOI; D&AD; Waterstones; Winsor and Newton and Tranport for London. My clients include The Royal Opera House; Penguin Books; BBC; The Royal Shakespeare Co; The Times; The Telegraph; Time Magazine; Little Brown; Random House; Scottish National Ballet; Ernst and Young; Good Housekeeping and Reader’s Digest.
