STATEMENT

After vacillating between meticulous hard edge poppy paintings (too stiff and impersonal) and improvisational automatic drawing (too flimsy and unstructured) for a long time, it recently occured to me to simply drop the drawings onto everyday packaged goods. I think the results are fun, honest, strange, and very human.

Over time, I moved to working almost exclusively on cereal boxes, because they are the most thoughtfully, playfully, ridiculously designed packaging available.

Cereal boxes are intended to explode visually on the shelf in the store, and also to be read and explored on the breakfast table by sleepy-eyed families.

I like the idea that my personal, dreamy drawing imagery can enter this hieroglyphic medium of cereal boxes that has been devised to supercharge drowsy consumers with a jolt of simple carbohydrates.
