Susan Richards
Susan Richards STATEMENT My collage became a daily practice in early 2012. I open an old dictionary randomly and pick a section that has a picture. I read the definitions of the pictured word as well as its neighbors and then Google images until I find something that fits the situation and the word(s) I chose. The collages that result are diptychs and sometimes triptychs of associations. I want the viewers’ input to help in solving the puzzle. Eventually I will box the cards and also make a book. In part, my motivation is to create a paean to the disappearance of the printed dictionary. I will miss the serendipitous finds I run into when looking up a word in the “old school” dictionary format. BIO As an artist I am primarily a painter, though I work in many different media. I worked professionally as a bookbinder and conservator at the Boston Athenaeum which gave me a heightened love of all things printed and from another era. I have also worked as an art educator and as a professional portrait painter. Now I make art to answer my own puzzles about what makes up the past, the present and the future. I have shown my work in a variety of venues in Boston, both in academic and professional settings. I am an associate of the Kingston Gallery in Boston, and showed examples of my collages in the August exhibition and my paintings in July of this year. ARTIST CONTACT [click to email] IMAGES
