Collage in All Dimensions

Collage in All Dimensions

by Gretchen Bierbaum & Petrina Gardner

Published by the National Collage Society (United States), Collage in All Dimensions defines collage and assemblage in art history terms. Collage existed in many craft forms before Braque and Picasso created it as a fine art in 1912.

The book’s contents include a brief history of collage, a glossary of French terms, a discussion of copyright issues, archival approaches recommended for artists, and images of the top award-winning collages in 20 years of National Collage Society juried exhibits.

Dr. Henry Adams, Chairman, Art History at Case Western Reserve University is quoted in the book:

“…it suggests that Picasso did not so much invent collage as discover an existing popular art form that could be spotlighted, and that posed interesting questions. Collage is inherently unruly. It can be funny, and perhaps a little zany, since it twists objects out of their original context.”
