Where Photography Meets Collage

at the New Orleans Photo Alliance Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
in conjunction with Kolaj Institute and Kolaj Fest New Orleans 2025
25 June-14 August 2025

Opening Reception: Wednesday, 25 June 2025, 6-8PM

For the past 18 months, Kolaj Institute has investigated the intersection of photography and collage through a series of exhibitions and artist residencies in partnership with the New Orleans Photo Alliance. This research has been guided by the idea, “The mediums of collage and photography are bound together in an ongoing dialogue. The photographer makes pictures of the world. The collagist remixes those pictures to tell a story about the world we live in. What happens when the photographer begins collaging their own work? What happens when the collage artist picks up the camera?” This exhibition is the third in the project.

The exhibition was juried by Naomi White, an abolitionist feminist, artist, and educator, working on ideas at the intersection of political ecology and photography. White holds an MFA in Photography and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts in New York, a Post Baccalaureate in Photography from the San Francisco Art institute, and a BA in English Literature from San Francisco State University. White is the winner of Photo District News’s Objects of Desire award, and a finalist for the 2023 Hopper Prize. Her work has been published in PDN, The Brooklyn Rail, Cut Me Up, FAYN, and Uncertain States. White has lectured at the Center for Ethics at Cal Poly Pomona, Santa Monica City College, and UCLA Extension. She has exhibited her work throughout North America and Europe. She is the faculty chair of the photography department at the New York Film Academy in Burbank, California. www.naomiwhite.com
