Brandon Brewer
Brandon Brewer STATEMENT Brandon uses mixed media (i.e. magazine/online clippings, digital illustration and manipulation as well as pencil, ink and paint) to recreate the contours of the face and body, continuing a passion for portraits and figure drawing he developed in his youth. Thematically Brandon’s collage work involves the assembly of three elements: Black joy, Black beauty and Blackness, the representations of which he often passively absorbed as a media consumer in his youth. As an adult in the context of quarantine and BLM, his art is both an act of self-care and political as he nurtures a pride in Black culture while also actively and positively contributing to it. BIO Brandon Brewer was born in Germany, and raised in southern Arizona. He began his college career with a major in Media Arts and minor in Studio Art focusing on digital media and figure drawing. Language acquisition, however, soon eclipsed his artistic aspirations, leading to graduate studies in both Spanish and Communication Disorders, and, finally, a career as a speech-language pathologist in Los Angeles, California. Brandon attended open figure-drawing workshops and occasionally illustrated digital portraits for family and friends as a creative outlet, but it was the pandemic of 2020 and Black Lives Matter movement that reawakened his artistic spirit, which led him to the medium of analog and digital collage as a therapeutic means of expression, and self-discovery. He currently resides in Pico Union, Los Angeles. ARTIST CONTACT [click to email] IMAGES |
