Keith Kitz
Keith Kitz STATEMENT Curiosity and continuous exploration are the tenants of my making. Trial and error, testing, and iteration are central to my process. I do not concern myself with style, classification, or trend. Equal parts graphic designer and artist, I am not exclusively defined by these labels; I am equally identified as a poet, painter, or simply a maker. My work utilizes a wide variety of techniques and often incorporates my own photography, analog mark-making, as well as carefully curated found items collected through my travels. I remain attentive and open to accepting opportunities and receiving inspiration from any source I pass during daily walks—many times taking the long way to a destination results in hitting the inspiration jackpot. While I appreciate traditions and standards, I believe they are meant to be tested and subverted. I practice this freely when working with my favorite design component—typography. I am classically trained in the art of crafting type, and at times this serves a piece sufficiently. Other subject matters often require type that bends, breaks, and contorts in order to result in a stronger, indelible visual. Mere legibility is not always my objective or intention and existing typefaces are not always suitable for my making. I employ technology in my making, however, I am more concerned with precision in my process than perfection in the results. For me, the computer is only a place to generate parts and assemble compositions. Continually intrigued by the dichotomy and synergy of analog versus digital, I often move my work from off-line to on-line and back, only to inevitably end in the digital space. The true value of technology is the ease at which it allows me to collect parts, arrange them, and easily produce high quality editions. BIO Keith Kitz is an artist, graphic designer, and educator living in Boston, Massachusetts. He is the founder of Keith Kitz Design, a practice that has supported clients in the realization of their visual goals for over a decade. Kitz is also the Program Director (BFA and MA), and an Assistant Professor, Graphic Design in the College of Arts & Sciences at Suffolk University. His coursework runs the full spectrum of student development from fundamentals, the creation and implementation of multi-channel design campaigns, and theses. Outside of classroom and client commitments, Kitz established his 365 Poster Project. Since 2014, this purely experimental space has allowed him to embrace his passion for the form, generating a minimum of a poster a day annually. Kitz’s daily making has resulted in several thousand entries and represents a comprehensive range of personal, social, and political topics. He is honored that so many of his entries have traveled the world to be included in global exhibitions. Kitz’s award-winning work has been chronicled in periodicals, books, exhibitions, and permanent collections throughout the United States, and globally in over 50 countries. He has also had the honor of contributing as juror to several poster competitions and a variety design events. ARTIST CONTACT [click to email] IMAGES |
