STATEMENT

In order to ascertain the potential contemporary identities of “Art” and myself as an “Artist”, I make work which considers their basic components, elements, constituents, materials. I do this by way of studying the potential objective and subjective identities of the appropriated materials I employ within my practice. In other words, I explore the physical and conceptual history of art by exploring the materials’ own historic physicality; thereby considering the experiential qualities of an artist’s “making” process. Most recently I have been very self-consciously aware of the role of the material, in the logic of how they behave or how they induct me to behave with them.

The forms of the found figures fundamentally inform my fickle, formal and formulaic frivolities.

I work mainly with sculptural installation but I use drawing and collage as a fundamental coincidence occurring throughout my creative process. I see my work as three-dimensional collage as it relies on the careful cutting up and empathetic piecing together of a manifestation of remnants picked up, produced, and placed–“Art” objects and “Not Art” objects–Catechizing on us the differences and similarities between them.

BIO

I am 21 years old and am a Visual Artist based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Currently I am in my fourth year studying a BA honours degree in Fine and Applied Art [Sculpture, Video, Time, Performance/Photography] at the University of Ulster, Belfast. As well as exhibiting works frequently within the university campus, I have shown work in Catalyst Arts Gallery, Belfast, as part of the “Haphazard” student group show in 2011. Outside of my practice, I am currently a contributor (writer, reviewer) to Visual Belfast, a new art journal made by students who attend the art college. I have also volunteered as staff for many art organizations within Belfast, such as PS2 Gallery in 2010.
