Sima Schloss
Sima Schloss STATEMENT Like consciousness itself, the medium of collage is cumulative, aggregate, constructed through the mind’s desire to see itself reflected in chronological process. It stacks, rips, defaces, and replaces. Its memories are writ scattershot with the voices of others and with communiqués whispered from within. It is polyphonic. Collage wears every other medium across its face, like the great grandparent of art, rendering the act of thinking material, with paint, print, ink, swaths of photographs, fields of color, Letraset and adhesives. As an artist, I don’t believe in masterpieces. I believe in the truth that comes from the immediacy of a brainstorm and the sureness of first gesture. In my assemblages, I co-opt multiple aspects of my personal history and surroundings as source material in service of constructing alchemical, pop culture-inflected odes. They’re like my children –sometimes funny, sometimes ornery, alternately retracting and reaching out. My practice is often an attempt at amplifying nuances lost in time; and when it really works for me, it transmutes those moments into something that I barely recognize, something that is more than the sum of its parts. And, isn’t that like life… when you’re glad to be alive? BIO Sima Schloss grew up in a suburb on the south shore of Long Island and studied art at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island and graduated in 1993. Shortly thereafter she moved to New York City, where, as she states, “My life really began.” ARTIST CONTACT [click to email] IMAGES
