Rzecz o współczesnym kolażu w Polsceby Magdalena SobolskaThe book (Re)konstrukcje is an artistic manifesto, expressing my fascination with collage, its possibilities, and the variety of means of expression that can be accommodated within it. While creating the essays that comprise this work, I was driven by a determination to present contemporary collage as broadly as possible—as it unfolds in Poland “here and now.” I wanted to demonstrate the broad range of technical and narrative possibilities of this medium. In these texts, I also challenge the way collage is perceived today. It is described as a frivolous technique, attributed with inferior significance and shallow subject matter. All of this translates into collage’s minimal visibility in art institutions. (Re)konstrukcje. is a record of my journeys: both literal and those taken through reflection and discussion. The book also invites the reader to embark on a journey into the depths of the artistic worlds presented within its pages. Initially, the pantheon of collagists gathered in the publication was intended to consist of eleven people. I wanted to present my own work, the work of five artists I invited to participate in the project, and five others selected in an open call in the fall of 2025. However, my desire to showcase the broadest possible spectrum of contemporary collage in Poland prompted me to expand the publication. I included five additional artists, selected from among those who applied for the call I organized. I visited ten artists in their studios – in Warsaw, Łódź, Gdańsk, and Uszkowce. I spoke with four more online, and thanks to a twist of fate, I met with one of the artists in her studio. It is a multi-voiced collage narrative that is finally ready to be heard, featuring 17 essays and over 200 collages by 16 artists: Curatorial Essays by: ![]() 8.3″x11.7″; paper collage; 2024.
