Call for Submissions: PoetryXCollage

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

PoetryXCollage Open Submission

This call for submissions will remain open as we put together future volumes of the journal.

PoetryXCollage is a printed journal of artwork and writing that operates at the intersection of poetry and collage. We are interested in found poetry, blackout poetry, collage poems, haikus, centos, response collages, response poems, word scrambles, concrete poetry, scatter collage poems, and other poems and artwork that inhabit this world.

Each issue presents six movements of work by artists and curators. Page spreads are meant to be free zones of thinking where the contributor has chosen all elements of the layout: font, image place, composition, etc.

Artists and writers interested in submitting should prepare 3-5 page spreads for consideration. Page spreads must conform to exact specifications and include a general artist narrative and a short page spread narrative. We strongly suggest reviewing a copy of PoetryXCollage prior to submitting. We also recommend downloading the PoetryXCollage Specs Doc pdf and reviewing its contents. You can download this Transparent PNG Template to make sure your submission is the correct size and accounts for the bleed and gutter.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a page spread?
A page spread is two consecutive pages viewed together or the two pages visible whenever you open a book or magazine. When you submit your image, you will have already done the work of imagining what those two pages will look like sitting side by side and will have combined them into a single image, accounting for margins, bleed lines, and the gutter.

Do I need to include the color lines representing the margins, bleed, and gutter in my submission?
No. We want you to submit the page spread exactly as you would like to see it printed. No other lines or marks are necessary. If you use the template we provided, make sure you delete that layer before saving your page spread as a jpg.

Can I submit page spreads with images that are full bleed or that take up the entire page spread and cross the gutter?
Yes. We provide the margins, bleed, and gutter lines for those who wish to use them but you are not required to set your images within the margins. See the PoetryXCollage Specs Doc pdf for examples of full bleed page spreads with images that cross the gutter. Keep in mind that anything that crosses the gutter will be slightly cut off by the folding of the pages into the spine of the book.

I have some collages and poems. Can you help me put them together into a page spread?
The premise of the journal is that artists are presenting a fully realized layout.  Page spreads are meant to be free zones of thinking where the contributor has chosen all elements of the layout: font, image place, composition, etc. We will periodically run Poetry & Collage Residencies in which we help participants learn how to make a page spread. Sign up for our mailing list to receive news about upcoming calls for artists.

I have 2 images (a collage and a poem) that I’d like to submit as a page spread. How do I do combine them?
The 2 images should be combined into a single file using Photoshop or another image editor. Either download and open the template provided above or create a new project with a canvas size of 3675 x 2775 pixels at 300dpi and then arrange the two images side by side. The reason we’re requesting it this way is that we want the artists to take ownership of the page spread design.

How do I photograph or scan my work so that I can create a page spread?
Google and YouTube are your friends. Many free tutorials exist that will walk you through the steps of scanning or photographing your work. Or ask an artist friend for help.

Do you accept digital collage?
Yes, we take a broad view of collage, which includes digital or hybrid work.

Do you accept work in languages other than English?
Yes, we accept submissions of work in languages other than English. Your accompanying texts need to be in English and we suggest including an English translation of your poetry in the Page Spread Narrative portion of your submission.
