COLLAGE ON VIEW
Guillaume Chiron: Un air de famille
at the Château d’Oiron in Plaine-et-Vallées, France
19 October-31 December 2024
Guillaume Chiron’s “Un air de famille” (A Family Resemblance) is an exhibition dedicated to portraits, organized with the National Monuments Center at the Château d’Oiron. For this show, Chiron produced a new series of work and reworked some of his collages into an improbable scenography and forms that merge sculpture, architecture, design, and installation.
The artist systematically creates work in situ and in interaction with the exhibition venue. The discourse and scenography are renewed each time. Thus the exhibition, “Un air de famille”, owes its content and its configuration to the very nature of the Château d’Oiron in Plaine-et-Vallée. It consists of revisiting the portrait in various forms, a genre which, originally a symbol of power created for posterity, finds a natural place within the walls of the château. Chiron created a new series of paintings, sculptures and installations, including a very large suspended fireplace, the completely unexpected lifting of a wall of the exhibition and the monumental reconstruction of a cave, a work awarded a CNAP creation grant in 2023. The artist, fascinated by secret passages, hidden doors, magic libraries and tunnel floors, enjoys playing on our own curiosity to discover unexpected spaces, in a staging that is each time meticulously prepared.
This exhibition was curated by and presented in collaboration with Anthony Bonnin, independent artist consultant and curator.
