4 October-3 November 2019

In 2017, Erika Lawlor Schmidt, Executive Director of Stone Valley Arts at Fox Hill, was a participating artist in the International Collage Exchange, (ICE), organized by Dale Copeland in Taranki, New Zealand. While in the process, she found Copeland’s invitation to art venues around the world seeking to host the 20th annual ICE exhibit. She wrote Copeland, inquiring about the possibility for Stone Valley Arts as the next destination for the ICE show. She was surprised and delighted to find out that Stone Valley Arts had been accepted! This 20th annual ICE exhibit features 76 artists from around the globe. The show features collage crafted with found papers, ephemera and objects, painting, drawing and digital pictures. The artists explore the surreal, the sublime, the humorous, the nostalgic and cerebral and several artists have written their personal stories on the back of their collage. These stories add perspective, emotion and understanding to their artwork.

This exhibition can be seen as the start of a unique new program for Stone Valley Arts as they develop a branch of programming to promote collage as a relevant Art Form and explorative creative experience. SVA looks forward to hosting annual collage shows in the future and offering educational workshops and forums as the Collage Center of Vermont.

Shown alongside ICE is “Vermont Feministe: Regional Invitational”:
In the planning for the ICE exhibit, Lawlor Schmidt felt it important to the community to include a select group of relevant and recognized Vermont artists to exhibit in tandem with ICE. Each artist offers a unique take on the female experience. Their visceral, emotional, psychological and spiritual observations, occurrences and memories are explored and revealed through the language of collage. Heidi Smith, Jane Davies, Nina DuBois and Athena Tasiopoulos join Lawlor Schmidt in representing their region.
