IN THE STUDIO

The Art Bunker

Having studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, Stacy Blint now makes art from her suburban home in Wisconsin. Her work “attempts to create a dialogue between the visual and the written, capturing experiences, possibilities, and instances of the human condition—-its splendour, its vulgarity, and its weird and comic manner,” says her website. “Stacy is interested in exploring the domestic, the daily, the mundane, the overlooked, dreams, family, love, death and relationships.” Blint shared her studio with Kolaj Magazine.

Where I make art, I like to call it the “art bunker” because it is in the unfinished basement of the house where I live in suburban Wisconsin. Looking at the house from the outside you would have no idea that this space existed.

This is not a pretty studio space. It’s rambunctious, eclectic, large and very very productive. I spend time in the studio almost every day and produce a good volume of poetry, collage, writing and painting.

To me the art of collage is about using materials at hand. For me that includes space. It’s nice to be able to walk downstairs anytime of the night or day and work.

I have three active work tables where I make collage, draw, and write. I have a wall where I paint on large canvases, two stand-by storage/inspiration tables and a clean table I use for small format photography along with matting and framing. I have a small table for woodworking and plans to expand my power tool collection.

A typical day in the studio includes an hour for administrative art-related tasks. A digital collage exercise, the writing and/or revision of poems or short stories, and then work on paintings or collages in progress.
