“Carpet Diem!” at Portland International Airport

Portland International Airport in Oregon, USA, is replacing its 25-year-old carpeting in January 2015. The current carpet is being honoured with the exhibition “Carpet Diem!” by collage artist Nancy Wilkins. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a 132”x192” collage made of carpet from different locations throughout the airport terminal.

installation-viewThe airport describes the collage as incorporating “trending Instagram photos of traveler’s feet on the carpet, big and small, with socks in the existing carpet design, a groovy manicure, and even a PDX pooch. ‘Carpet Diem!’ is a tribute to the historical 1980s retro-style turquoise and purple airport carpet…” Greta Blalock, the administrator of the Port Art Program, said that Wilkins, as an artist used to working with paper, had quite a challenge, but that she “accepted the invitation, frankly, because it was just too quirky to pass up.” “Carpet Diem!” is on view above the moving walkway on Concourse D of Portland International Airport through December 2015. The Port Art Program partners with regional artists, arts organizations, museums and schools to showcase visual art and musical performance at Portland International Airport.
