Anthony Muisyo’s Artist Portfolio

In the artwork of Mombasa, Kenya artist Anthony Muisyo, colorful digital compositions mix with sheng, a Swahili and English-based creole popular with young people in Kenya. Muisyo is part of a large movement of artists in Kenya who use digital collage to share their world. “Collage for me means bringing together different ideas from lived experiences to the digital canvas to tell my own stories,” he said. “I like the process of snapping photos, collecting posters, wrappings and other mundane objects with quirky colours and design whenever I’m out on walks and bringing them into my work. I feel it grounds my work in a certain place and time. This way, I hope that my work is able to speak to people who may share the same experiences as mine.” A portfolio of Anthony Muisyo’s work appears in Kolaj 35.

Anthony Muisyo is a digital artist who grew up at a time where the prevalence of computers began seeping into the working class homes of many Africans in the mid-2000s. Using this as his main context, he seeks to build up on the graphic design experiments observed in the physical world such as astrology posters, hand painted signs and pop culture advertisements, and translating them into the digital space through the use of digital collages and experimental mediums such as AR and machine learning. The aim is to explore how the digital and the physical coexist. The artist lives and works in Mombasa, Kenya. Learn more at www.anthonymuisyo.com and on Instagram @nafsi.yake and @peni.mbili.
