Collage Gallery: Espace 40, Montreal

Scene 3 Prise 2 by Denis Dulude

by Benoit Depelteau

Espace 40 is a new gallery in Montreal’s Mile End that keeps collage in focus. Kolaj Editor Benoit Depelteau paid a visit and talked about the gallery’s initial offerings in their opening show, “Aperçu_Preview_14”.

As I continued to wander through the gallery, I was surprised to observe the intensity and liveliness that are, in my mind, significant in recent collage practice. Most of the featured artists, in their own practice and style, work in a way that leaves plenty of room for intuition and spontaneity: a quality mentioned a few times when one of the gallery’s owners, Denis Dulude, talks about his [well-documented] interest in collage…Over the years, this type, graphic and motion graphics designer has produced a copious amount of explorative pieces using screen printing and collage, the most recent large scale examples being presented in this exhibition. His work Scène 3, Prise 2, using multiple layers of street posters as a support, combines typography, images and textures into a skillfully deconstructed composition.
